Increased productivity and comfort
Fendt launched the 312 Vario tractor model at the Agritechnica 2005 in Hanover. It is the new top model for the popular 300 Tractor series, which has been successful for many years. The tractor has a maximum power output of 125 HP, or 92 kW, according to ECE R 24 and expands the Fendt tractor 300 series upwards in terms of performance and features, thanks to the Vario transmission among other things.
After ten years of Vario experience, Fendt now transfers its Vario expertise to the lightweight compact standard tractor class. This is the first time that the benefits of a stepless drive have been made available for agricultural applications in this large market segment.
The objective behind the development of the top model for the 300 tractor series, besides versatility, was to increase productivity and comfort. The tractor boasts a simple operating concept, a new design and improved comfort in the cab.
The new 312 Fendt tractor: dynamic and versatile
The Fendt tractor 312 Vario combines an extremely low unladen weight of just 4.390 kg and 125 HP with very compact dimensions for the first time – while offering the far-reaching benefits of a stepless Vario transmission. The result: an exceptional dynamic and versatility tractor based on an excellent power-to-weight ratio of just 35 kg/HP. This is especially noticeable in row crop operations with high tyres or in grassland operations when preventing soil compaction with wide flotation tyres. Together with a short wheelbase of 2.35 m, the Fendt tractor 312 Vario is manoeuvrable in tight conditions.
Simple joystick operation
The Fendt tractor 312 Vario is controlled with a new single-gate joystick, which sets a new technical benchmark for its ease of operation. Unlike powershift or even a synchro tractor, there is no need to change back and forth between the main shift lever and the group or super creeper gears.
Vario design and operating benefits
The new ML 75 Vario transmission was specially developed for the Fendt 312 Vario compact standard tractor. The entire speed range of this drive unit, which has only one driving range, goes from a super slow 30 metres per hour to 40 km/h forwards or 20 km/h reverse. This results in up to 10 percent more area coverage in the field. The top speed of 40 km/h is achieved at a fuel-saving 1900 rpm. This is made possible through the use of large-sized hydrostats, which are well-known for their high degree of efficiency and impressive 45 degree swing angle.
An additional creeper gearbox, for example for vegetable-growing or specialty crops, is no longer required because the Vario transmission covers these application ranges. Freely selectable cruise control speeds aid in maintaining exact working speeds. The wear-free shuttle gearbox, is operated with the touch of a finger to the switch located on the left side of the steering wheel. This simplifies all work which involves frequent shunting, such as front loader operations.
The 312 Vario is the first Fendt tractor with stepless drive that can also tackle extreme operations in forestry applications (trailer with drive axle) or specialty crops, with a proportional ground PTO. Furthermore, an integral turboclutch function permits precise shunting when mounting implements.
The Fendt tractor engine – a high-tech powerhouse
Superior fuel economy
The price of fuel makes up the greatest share of costs over the lifetime of a tractor – over 50%. This is an often overlooked cost factor and fuel prices are certain to remain at a high level. The economical use of fuels is therefore of fundamental importance for Fendt.
Fendt has therefore chosen to employ a newly developed quiet-running four-cylinder Deutz engine with the latest four-valve technology, common rail technology and high-quality AGRex exhaust gas recirculation system in the 312 Vario Fendt tractor. This high-tech engine with 4.04 litres of displacement supplies 15 HP extra power, impressive pulling power and max. 125 HP at 1800 rpm according to ECE R 24. The Deutz engine meets emission standards according to TIER III a.
The new speed-independent common rail high-pressure injection system, makes an injection pressure of 1600 bar possible. Together with the fully electronic engine control EDC-7, this system guarantees the Fendt tractor exceptional torque rise and a quieter engine, especially in the lower engine speed range.
The high-tech fuel injection system is assisted by the high-quality external exhaust gas recirculation system, AGRex. This process makes precise cooling and proportioning of exhaust possible, a part of which is then returned for combustion. Together with an optimized injection setting, fuel consumption is reduced by up to 10%, compared to engines with only simple, internal exhaust gas recirculation.
Two oil-lubricated high-pressure pumps are another technical innovation. They guarantee trouble-free operation with RME – an argument that is gaining in importance in these times of volatile fuel prices. With an impressive 210-litre fuel tank and an optimum specific fuel consumption of only 212 g/kWh, the 312 Vario Fendt tractor holds the key to superior profitability and also guarantees longer driving distances for compact standard tractors.
Driving comfort and safety of the Fendt tractor on par with commercial vehicles
With its path-setting front axle suspension with level control, the 312 Vario Fendt tractor sets new technical standards regarding driving comfort, driving safety and traction. This optional system is based on the tried and tested swing axle principle with a single suspension cylinder. It has a suspension travel of +/- 45 mm. The suspension of the Fendt tractor, which can be locked, provides excellent working and driving comfort in the field and on the road. Level control ensures high payloads and a constant, high degree of suspension comfort. The suspension of the Fendt tractor also ensures optimum traction and braking safety – which is especially important on slopes, because it allows all four wheels to maintain ground contact longer. Together with the active shock loading stabilizing and ring piston high performance braking systems, the new 312 Vario Fendt tractor achieves driving comfort and safety on par with commercial vehicles.
The Vario Fendt tractor cab: a superb workplace
The operating concept of the 312 Vario Fendt tractor is an ideal symbiosis between state-of-the-art technology and ease of operation. In the Vario Fendt tractor cab, all control elements are located on the steering column unit or the control console on the right-hand side of the cab. In addition to the central instrument cluster, the control units for climate control and lighting are also located on the steering column unit. The steering wheel can be adjusted vertically by 100 mm. Speed or transmission ratio is controlled with the new joystick. The hydraulics are operated with a crossgate lever, as in the previous 300 Ci Fendt tractor models.
All other operating elements, for 4WD and differential lock as well as for the PTO and suspension, are located well within reach on the right-hand control console of the tractor. Background lighting ensures safe operation at night. The 312 Vario Fendt tractor is also equipped with a comfortable fold-down passenger seat, like on the 400 Vario Fendt tractor.
Three-speed PTO with comfort controls
The new 312 Vario Fendt tractor has a three-speed PTO with 540/750 and 1000 rpm. Speeds are preselected conveniently with a rotary dial, located on the control console, and easily activated with the push of a button. Additionally, the 312 Vario Fendt tractor is standard-equipped with a PTO automatic mode, which improves handling at the headlands considerably. The PTO engages and disengages automatically when the automatic mode is activated, depending on the height of the powerlift. The driver of the tractor now only needs to operate the rear power lift at the headlands. This allows turning manoeuvres to be performed faster – erroneous actuation of the PTO is not possible.
The hydraulic system – powerful and versatile
All hydraulic functions are supplied by a standard-equipped tandem pump, which has a total delivery capacity of 76 litres. This allows four double-acting mechanical control units to be operated. Lift capacity lies at 4.6 tonnes, which allows implements up to 3.1 tonnes to be lifted. The available oil quantity is a generous 42 litres. The hydraulic and transmission oil supplies are separate; this prevents oil from mixing and permits longer standing times. Environmentally compatible bio-oils can therefore be used for the hydraulics.
Conclusion: With the 312 Fendt tractor as the new top model of the successful 300 tractor series, Fendt has brought an innovative, very compact and extremely powerful tractor onto the market, which meets the growing demands found in day-to-day operations.
