On 4 January 1958, Sir Edmund Hillary reached the South Pole with three Ferguson TE20 tractors. Now, over 47 years later, an MF 4370 tractor – one of the direct descendants of the famous Little Grey Fergie tractor – is working with the British Antarctic Survey team.
Mark Grigson, MF UK tractors Area Sales Manager explains : « The MF 4370 tractor, which has been with the survey team for a couple of years now, is fitted with an engine block heater for cold starting plus a front linkage for snow clearing duties. The British Antarctic Survey team also have several other tractors on site and are delighted with the tractors’ ability to withstand the freezing conditions. Afterall, the tractors come with the perfect pedigree ! »
The original TE20 tractors took three months to travel 2000 km to the South Pole. Battling through snow and ice the tractors reached heights of 3200 m in temperatures as low as -30 degrees C.
